This essay consists of two parts. Part one is a case study of two renown scholars, Hu Shi (1891-1962) and Wu Mi (1894-1978), that tries to bring to light the private world of the se two intellectually divergent contemporaries, in particular their handlings of marriage and love. The Westernized Hu Shi accepted a marriage arranged by his mother, and dared not divorce after he fell in love with Miss Cao Chengying. His "timidity" in love, however, has been widely acclaimed by his countrymen. By contrast, Wu Mi, a defender of Chinese tradition, showed remarkable courage in pursuing love. In fact, he seemed willing to pay any price for what he considered true love. Nevertheless, he ended up being deeply disappointed and was ridiculed by many. A few long-held misunderstandings also need to be corrected. Hu Shi and Edith Clifford Williams (1885-1971) had not yet fallen in love when Hu left for China in 1917. They did have an affair, but it occurred at a much later time. Hence it is misconceived to suggest that Hu's marriage with Jiang Dongxiu was at the expense of his love with Miss Williams. Nor is it true, as commonly believed, that Wu Mi fell in an unrequited love with Miss Mao Yanwen. Wu's diary, which only recently has been made available, confirms that Mao had at one time agreed to marry him, but Wu missed the opportunity because of bad timing when he had a brief encounter with an attractive American girl in Paris. As both Hu and Wu were distinguished cultural figures, their respective private lifes inevitably took on historical significance. On the basis of the case study, part two of this essay analyzes generally public reaction to the private life of famous people. It is worth mentioning that despite the influence of revolution and the romantic May Fourth movement, marriage and love in China remained old fashioned. Falling in love with somebody else was not a generally accepted reason for divorce. The public response to private life, whether fair or not, are worth studying because they inevitably help in discovering the climate of opinion or the Zeitgeist of particular periods of history. Ostensibly, so far as marriage and love are concerned, images from the past was still to be seen on the new screen of early twentieth-century China.
