While most language teaching theorists and practitioners ag問e 由at the primary focus of English language teaching should be on helping students develop communicative competen 凹, there has been a small but growing chorus of voices suggestin直that communicative competence cannot be achieved by focusing solely on the development of communicative skiIls in speaki 唔, listening,時ading, writing, grammar, and conve的atlO n management. The necess前y communicative skills and linguistic knowledge 由此缸e woven through the fabric of communicative competence must be colored and strengthened by and through the teaching of cul恥re. This paper will argue 也at commumcattve competence is incomplete without culture knowledge, awareness of the impact of culture on communicative events, and the development of a non-judgmental a'恤個de towar由 cul制問differences. This paper will discuss the impo此ance of developing these three essential pilla凹of intercultural communicative competence and suggest classroom activities teachers may wish to incorporate when introducing 由eir students to the role of culture in communication
