大潮期間,東港及其附近水域之水溫經常會呈現近似潮汐頻率的週期性劇烈波動;然而不同的季節其出現之頻數並不一致,例如:它們主要出現在晚春與夏季,秋季甚少,其它季節則偶有或不規則地發生。這種水溫變動可能是由源自於高屏峽谷的內潮所造成的。高屏峽谷之水體層化現象相當顯著,有利於內波運動。由遠方傳來的內潮會將谷中深層較冷之海水向上抬升,在合適的分層條件下這些被抬升的冷水甚至會漫出峽谷,然後再沿四週之海床以類似重力流之方式向外擴張流動。當冷水流至近岸處時即造成東港水溫之急速下降。至於前述其出現頻數之季節性差異情形則可能與本地海水斜溫層深度之長期變化有關。在秋、冬、春等季節,高屏峽谷內之海面混合層深度往往遠大於附近陸棚之平均水深,因此不易造成深層水溢流現象。反之,在春末與夏季則海面混合層較淺,故深層冷水很容易就因內潮之抬升而漫出峽谷。這種抬升與溢流的機制可以將富於營養鹽的深層海水輸送至近岸的淺海水域,因此對東港附近海域之生態系統而言,應當具有相當重要的意義。
Water temperature fluctuations, with sharp drops at tidal frequencies, occur at Tung-Kang and nearby offshore areas usually during the spring tide period; however, the frequency of their occurrence is obviously not stationary in different seasons, i. e they appear mainly in late spring and summer, scarcely in autumn and only occasionally in other seasons. These fluctuations are likely to be induced by internal surges originated from the Kao-Ping Canyon where internal motions are energetic. Under favorable stratification conditions, uplifting of isopycnal surface due to internal tidal waves coming from a remote source, may induce colder, deeper waters from the canyon overflowing and spreading over nearby seabed; possibly in the form of gravity currents, which possess a bore-like head in the front that causes the abruptly cooling in Tung-Kang waters as the bore arrives. The temporal non-uniformity of the monthly occurrence frequency of surge events could be attributed to the variation of the depth of local thermocline. In seasons like autumn, winter and spring, the base of the surface mixed layer in the canyon is usually much deeper than the average depth of contiguous coastal areas, therefore it is inconvenient to activate an overflow mechanism. However, the mixed layer becomes shallower in late spring and summer, so colder deep waters could readily be uplifted to the shelf area when forced by the action of internal tidal waves. The elevation and overflow mechanism, being capable of conveying and pumping nutrient-enriched deeper waters to the shallow coastal region, is of significance to the ecosystem of Tung-Kang waters.
